Future Nostalgia
Joëlle Dubois

In her bold and colorful paintings, Joëlle Dubois (b. 1990; lives and works in Ghent) explores the impact of social media and the role of the individual in our society. Inspired by the flood of photos and video clips from the web, she confronts viewers with explicit scenes from the private sphere. In playfully improvised compositions, Dubois refers to both the abundance and the transience of images. In her figurative paintings on wooden panels, she explores themes of gender, sexuality, and fetishism. In a mixture of lethargy, obsession, and sadness, Dubois depicts her characters in intimate positions, pointedly capturing today’s frantically confused zeitgeist.

This monograph is the first to present a comprehensive cross-section of the artist’s oeuvre.

The catalog is published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name Future Nostalgia at NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein.

The catalogue texts were written by Maurice Funken (Director NAK, Aachen), Philippe Van Cauteren (Director S.M.A.K., Ghent) and Femke Vandenbosch (Art historian and critic, Ghent).
